Training to be an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) with XL Driving Tuition (XL)

To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you must be 21 years old and over and hold a full driving license for four or more years.

One of the first things to do when deciding to become an ADI is to telephone the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) 0870 0101 372 and request an ADI 14 booklet.  You will need to read this booklet. It tells you everything you need to know, including information about exams, prices, recommended reading materials.  This booklet also includes a registration form which you will need to fill in and return.

To qualify to be an ADI you must pass three exams.

• a theory/hazard perception test
• a practical test of your driving ability
• a practical test of your ability to teach

You must take all three exams in the order listed above within two years.  You have only three chances to pass each of the two practical tests.

The Theory/Hazard Perception test (aka Part 1)

XL Driving Tuition will provide you with a list of the recommended books to read, the CD-Rom to practise exam conditions with and a list of web sites to visit.  XL is just a phone call away.  We will help you with any questions you have problems with.  XL Driving Tution offers this support free of charge. 

The Test of Driving Ability (aka Part 2)

Part 2 tests your driving ability. It comprises of an hour long driving test in which you must show a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving, road safety, and that you can apply them in practice. You will be asked, within that hour, to perform four manoeuvres and the emergency stop.   

XL Driving Tuition will teach you everything required to pass your Test of Driving Ability in a comprehensive sequence of 2 hour lessons.  This will include a realistic mock test whilst using an actual test route with another XL Driving Instructor. Once you have all the knowledge required, you will have use of an XL car to practice with in your own time.  XL Driving Tuition charges £25 an hour for your driving tuition and £5 an hour for the XL car for your private practice.      

The Test of Ability to Instruct (aka Part 3)

Part 3 tests your ability to instruct. It is an hour long test in which you must show your ability to teach different, specific subjects at different levels.

XL Driving Tuition will teach you everything required to pass your test of ability to instruct in a comprehensive sequence of 2 hour lessons.  We will take you through all key stages in a methodical manner which will not only make the part 3 test more achievable, it will make  your teaching skills, once passed, more natural and realistic.  XL Driving Tuition charges £25 an hour for your tuition.
