Theory & Hazard Perception Starter Packs

XL Driving Tuition can assist you by offering starter packs to increase the chances of passing the theory test and the hazard perception test. These starter packs contain literature carefully chosen to assist pupils passing first time.

It is a good idea to book your theory test shortly after starting your driving lessons as there is usually a waiting time of about 2 weeks. In the meantime your XL approved driving instructor (ADI) can help you with any theory questions you may have as well as practical hazard test tuition while you are driving.  We can book your Theory & Hazard Perception Test for you free of charge.

Note: You cannot book a practical driving test until you have passed the theory test.

The Theory & Hazard Perception Test is made up of two parts;

  • A - the multiple choice part - tests your understanding of the theory behind driving

  • B - the hazard perception part - test consists of 14 video clips (without sound) designed to test your ability to spot potential hazards before they become real hazards

  • This Test is costs £31.00

If you pass one part and fail the other you'll fail the whole test, and you'll need to take both parts again. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test.

The Multiple Choice Element

  • Before the test starts you'll be given instructions on how the test works

  • You have 57 minutes to complete the test. There is a 15-minute practice session you can work through before starting the tests

  • You will be asked 50 randomly selected multiple-choice questions

  • A question and several answer options will appear onscreen and you have to select the correct answer to the question by touching the screen. Some questions may require more than one answer.

  • You can navigate between questions and 'flag' questions that you want to come back to later in the test.

  • To pass this element of the test you need to get at least 43 right

The Hazard Perception Test

  • Before the test starts you will be shown a short video showing you the format of the test and giving you the opportunity to practice on some sample video clips

  • In these tests you take the view of the driver, when you see a potential hazard you must click a button to indicate that you have identified a hazard

  • There are 15 hazards in total; every clip contains a hazard and one of the clips contains 2 hazards

  • All video clips start with a freeze frame of the scene and lasts approximately 1 minute

  • For each hazard you are scored from 0 to 5 depending on how early you identified the hazard

  • The maximum score for the test is 75 (15 hazards - a score of 5 for each)

  • The pass rate is 44 points
