Enjoy a Career with XL Driving Tuition Once You've Passed

FREE Part 1 Training

If you are looking for DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) training courses in Norwich, then look no further than XL Driving Tuition.

An Approved Driving Instructor (or ADI) is a driving instructor who has been tested and registered by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). The UK law mandates all driving instructors to be qualified before charging clients for their services. You can display a green badge on the left side of your car's windscreen confirming your registration with DVSA.

Our training begins with an initial assessment lesson with a brief overview of the 3 parts of the examination process. We then tailor make your course to suit you.

The three parts are:

  • Part 1 - a theory/hazard perception test

  • Part 2 - a practical test of your driving ability

  • Part 3 - a practical test of your ability to teach

"I learnt to drive with Rob at XL and couldn't have asked for a better instructor, so after deciding I would like to train to be a driving instructor, I knew there would be no-one better to learn with than XL. I wasn't wrong. There is a lot to learn to become a successful ADI, but Rob and Jacq both made the whole process a pleasurable experience, carrying out all training sessions with great patience and good humour and always available to call on their experience if needed. I passed with the highest score possible (6-6) which I am very proud of. I have no doubts that learning with XL has made me a better ADI than I perhaps would have been and can't recommend them highly enough”.

We conduct a 2-3 hour assessment session before starting with the driving instructor training. This session gives a brief description of all the 3 phases of the ADI training.

The initial assessment has proven to be very beneficial as it gives you a complete overview of the entire course. Additionally, it allows us to judge approximately how many hours tuition you will require to pass the examinations.

In this stage, you will have 1.5 hours to answer 100 multiple-choice theory questions. Additionally, you will spend half an hour watching 14 hazard perception videos to identify developing hazards promptly. To pass the multiple-choice test, you must achieve an overall score of at least 85 out of 100, with at least 20 out of 25 correct answers in each of the four categories. To pass the hazard perception test, a minimum score of 57 out of 75 is required. Both tests must be passed to complete Part 1.

During this phase, you will undergo an advanced practical driving test, showcasing expert-level driving skills and a strong understanding of the Highway Code. This test lasts one hour and evaluates five aspects: eyesight check, vehicle safety, general driving ability, maneuvers, and independent driving. To pass your Part 2 Driving Ability Test, you must not accumulate more than 6 driving faults and must avoid any serious or dangerous faults.

In the final stage, you will conduct a real 1-hour lesson during which you will be evaluated on 17 competency areas, grouped into three categories: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies. Following the lesson, the examiner will provide feedback on your performance, disclose your result, and furnish you with your completed Part 3 test report. To pass, you must achieve either a grade A or B. Passing the Part 3 test enables you to apply for your first ADI badge within 12 months of passing the test. If you do not pass, you have the opportunity to retake the test within 2 years of passing your Part 1 test.
